In 2023, there were an estimated 650+ individuals sleeping in their vehicle each night throughout Santa Cruz County. Safe Spaces serves as Santa Cruz County’s largest safe parking program. It allows up to 70 participants who are sleeping in their vehicle to park on the property of local faith communities each evening. The program gives them access to restrooms, Wi-Fi, case management, housing navigation, and, at some sites, showers and dinner. Most importantly, it gives them the knowledge that they will not be hassled, ticketed or victimized while sleeping in their vehicle.
